Voice-over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology is becoming more popular among small businesses which has now been recognised that it will not break the bank.

Small firms had been misled to believe that VoIP services are at a higher cost compares with traditional communication systems.

Councils make open data unusable, says Francis Maude

Some local government councils in the UK have “deliberately” limited the accessibility of data they are obliged to publish under the Freedom of Information Act, Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude said at the Conservative Party conference yesterday.

“I’m sorry to say that some councils spend time and money deliberately making data unusable to anyone else,” he said.

He pledged to make all information released through the FOI Act “machine readable”, so that independent websites or applications can retrieve it automatically.  

“All data released through FOI must be in a reusable and machine readable format, available to everyone and able to be exploited for social and commercial purposes,” Maude said.

Ben Bernanke to appear at RIPEC dinner Monday, Oct. 4

PROVIDENCE – Ben Bernanke, chairman of the Federal Reserve, will be the keynote speaker at the Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council’s annual dinner on Monday, Oct. 4.

The annual dinner will begin at 5:00 p.m. and speakers will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the R.I. Convention Center; a student town hall will be held beforehand at 3:00 p.m.

U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., will offer introductory remarks and Gov. Donald L. Carcieri, R.I. Senate President M. Teresa Paiva-Weed and R.I. House of Representatives Speaker Gordon Fox will also speak at the event.

HP appoints SAP’s cast off as CEO

Hewlett-Packard, the world’s largest IT company, has appointed the former chief executive of German software vendor SAP as its new CEO. 

Leo Apotheke stepped down from SAP in February 2010, shortly after the company announced an 8% drop in revenues for 2009. Until that point, he had served with the company for 20 years.
