Somedays I feel like I am the only driver out there who still does not own a GPS for my car. When I purchased my new car this summer, I decided not to spent the extra thousands to have a built-in navigation system. I figured it would be better to instead spend just hundreds on a portable device. Then I started shopping for these things and quickly a simple purchase became oh-so-complicated! I had no idea these little devices came in so many flavors! Just narrowing my choice down to one maker (Garmin is my current pick) has not done as much as I hoped to narrow my field of choices.

Finally, I decided that whatever Garmin GPS device I end up buying, it has to be bluetooth enabled. Not because I love to chat hands-free and drive, but because I learned that Garmin may soon be coming out with something called an Eco-Route add-on package for their GPS devices which would enable you to capture and display (in a very user-friendly and attractive way – see screen shots in linked article) your real-time fuel economy. So now my little Honda Fit can have the kind of information that a Prius owner enjoys.

But the add-on package won’t be out until 2010, but the article indicates that it will work with Garmin bluetooth models. So, Black Friday is almost here, and I have been paying attention to the various sales and the Garmin prices. Then this morning I noticed that Amazon has the Garmin nüvi 780 on sale at 75% off for $178.00 (you get an additional $10 off if you pay with Discover – I don’t have that card and it kind of cheeses me off that I can’t get the extra discount).

The problem is, I was not even thinking of getting one of the 700 series since they had been so expensive! So do I just go ahead and buy this – spending a bit more than I planned – because it is such a good deal and hopefully will work well with the add-on I really want? Anyone out there have one of these 700 series? Do you like them? Worth the extra money? I had been looking at getting a 265-285 with Traffic enabled.
