PROVIDENCE – The economic value of caring for an adult family member, partner or friend who suffered with chronic conditions or disabilities in Rhode Island reached an estimated $1.88 billion in 2009, according to the AARP’s Public Policy Institute.
On the national level, the figure was $450 billion, rising from the estimated $375 billion in 2007.
The report, “Valuing the Invaluable: The Growing Contributions and Costs of Family Caregiving, 2011,” found that an estimated 217,000 Rhode Island residents provided such care in 2009.
In additional, the report said the typical caregiver is a 49-year old woman who works outside of the home and spends nearly 20 hours per week providing unpaid care to her mother over the course of nearly five years. Almost Read more…

Mortgage industry employees are still signing documents they haven’t read and using fake signatures more than eight months after big banks and mortgage companies promised to stop the illegal practices that led to a nationwide halt of home foreclosures.
County officials in at least three states say they have received thousands of mortgage documents with questionable signatures since last fall, suggesting that the practices, known collectively as “robo-signing,” remain widespread in the industry.
The documents have come from several companies that process mortgage paperwork, and have been filed on behalf of several major banks. Read more…

Over 20 people have been arrested in the US, UK and the Netherlands in what appears to be a coordinated crackdown on suspected members of hacking group, Anonymous.
Most of the arrests were in the the US, where the authorities took 16 people into custody. Fourteen of these where charged with carrying out distributed denial of service (DoS) attacks against payments website, PayPal.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has been at odds with state schools chief Tony Evers over budget cuts, vouchers and teachers’ collective-bargaining rights. But they have found common ground in their aggravation with No Child Left Behind.
Walker and Evers formed a joint committee this month that will write a new state policy to replace the federal law requiring schools to ensure all students are passing state math and reading exams by 2014. Read more…

BOSTON – The New York Yankees are worth 86 percent more than the Boston Red Sox, according to Forbes.
The magazine said the Yankees were worth $1.7 billion, earning the No. 3 spot on its “The World’s Most Valuable Sports Teams” ranking, while the Red Sox, valued at $912 million, came in at No. 31.
The most valuable team in the world was Manchester United, at $1.86 billion, followed by the Dallas Cowboys, $1.81 billion, the Yankees, the Washington Redskins, $1.55 billion, Real Madrid, $1.45 billion, and the New England Patriots, $1.37 billion.

PROVIDENCE – Ten local small businesses were approved for $2.4 million in loans by the R.I. Economic Development Corporation on Thursday.
The financing will create and sustain 200 jobs in Rhode Island, the agency said.
