The UK has officially adopted the European Union’s updated rules on electronic communications, meaning that organisations must now seek permission before tracking user behaviour on their websites.
The new rules require website operators to get permission before they collect cookies, short text files describing a user’s activity and preferences. Cookies are used by website operators and advertisers to ‘remember’ users who have visited their sites before.
In a statement issued today, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport said it is working with browser makers to see if a system of requiring permission can built in to their software.

PROVIDENCE – 38 Studios LLC began moving into its new company headquarters in downtown Providence Friday and is expected to open the office on Tuesday, April 12, the company has told state officials.
An agreement with the R.I. Economic Development Corporation had called for Curt Schilling’s video game company to move in by May 1.
Company executives told the EDC that the move from Maynard, Mass., will be completed over the weekend and that 160 employees will be able to start working at 1 Empire Plaza on Tuesday. A formal grand opening will take place in the coming weeks.
Under a $75 million loan guarantee agreement with the EDC, 38 Studios has said it will ultimately bring 450 high-skilled, high-wage jobs to the state. The

Alumnus William Yu has sponsored an internship program that will give third-year commerce and engineering students experience working in Asia.
William Yu (Sc84, MBA87) wished there were more paid international summer internships when he attended Queens. Now as a managing partner of a global capital investment company, Mr. Yu wants to help create those opportunities for Queens students.
My career in international business and finance would have been accelerated had I had an international job experience earlier.

Over this past weekend, I was chatting with a friend of mine about the many benefits of using Skype for video conferencing. And after talking with her at length, she seemed genuinely excited so I recommended a webcam for her to buy so she could chat online with her parents in India.
