GTECH signs 10-year contract with Pan Malaysian Pools for new lottery system

PROVIDENCE – GTECH Corporation, the Providence-based subsidiary of Italy’s Lottomatica Group, signed a 10-year contract with Pan Malaysian Pools to provide a new central lottery system, terminals and ongoing services, Lottomatica announced Wednesday. Financial details of the agreement were not released.

“This new partnership in Malaysia is strategically important for GTECH as we look to further expand our footprint in the Asia-Pacific region,” said Jaymin B. Patel, GTECH president and CEO.

Pan Malaysian Polls administers and operates lottery games in Malaysia.

R.I. private sector loses jobs in 4Q 2009, in line with regional trend

BOSTON – Newly compiled statistics from the New England office of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that Rhode Island was among a majority of New England states that saw employment decline during the fourth quarter of 2009, according to a Business Employment Dynamic report released Thursday.

Rhode Island private sector employment fell 0.5 percent, losing 2,062 jobs, in the three months ended Dec. 31; New Hampshire and Maine private sector jobs also shrunk by 0.5 percent in the same period.

Massachusetts saw the largest employment decrease in the region with 14,490 jobs lost, falling 0.6 percent. I

Distress for the construction industry

The UKconstruction industry looks worrying as it’s forecasted to drop back into recession, research shows.

According to the Construction Products Association (CPA), output for the rest of 2010 will fall within the construction industry and will remain in decline for the first part of 2011.

Despite strong growth in the first six months of the year, forecasts show that the industry must prepare for a sluggish economic growth and sharp public sector cuts.

Construction output fell by 12% in 2009, the sharpest fall since 1974.

Michael Ankers, chief executive of the Construction Products Association, said:

“Although 2010 as a whole is likely to be slightly better than 2009, it is very much a year of two halves with construction output slipping back in the second half of the year as a result of growing uncertainty in the housing market and cuts in public spending.”
